EAST END NATIVE I went to Edison, Lincoln, and Alameda High Schools. As a "paper boy" for the Alameda Times Star, I loved getting to know my neighbors on the East End. WEST AND EAST ALAMEDA ROOTS My grandfather Bev Randall pumped gas and operated gas stations on Webster Street and Park Street. My grandmother Margaret Randall cut hair on Encinal Avenue. PARK STREET BUSINESS OWNERS After teaching "machine shop" at Alameda High School, my grandfather Karl Boller opened Chalet Tool Company on Eagle Avenue next to Park Street. My father Bill Boller eventually managed the business. My grandmother Margaret Boller worked in the home. 5TH-GENERATION ALAMEDAN My great-great grandmother Ida Randall moved from San Francisco to Alameda in 1923. Ida's son and grandson were "electric sign" designers in a San Francisco company that designed the Alameda sign on the Alameda Theater. TEACHERS AND ARTISTS My mother Bonnie Boller is an encaustic and ceramic artist. She was the founder and president of Alameda Women Artists and taught in Alameda public schools. My brother Robert Boller is a rhetoric professor at USF and has taught at the College of Alameda. Other family members were Alameda artists, Alameda teachers, and Alameda Recreation and Park Department leaders. LEGAL CAREER After graduating from UC Davis and Georgetown Law School, I returned home to Alameda to start my legal career. I also earned a Master in Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School. PROSECUTOR For 23 years, I have fought to protect public safety as a prosecutor. I've specialized in human trafficking, juvenile justice, consumer protection, sexual assault, and domestic violence. At an FBI press conference, I discussed our work on Operation Cross Country, a coordinated effort across the United States to end the sexual exploitation of children. COMMUNITY LEADER My volunteer service has led to opportunities to meet community leaders and elected officials, like President Bill Clinton. I've served on the City of Alameda Home Ownership Committee and boards for Alameda Meals on Wheels and Alameda Boys and Girls Club. I'm currently a two-term public health commissioner for Alameda County. HOMETOWN PRIDE I met Muhittin in the first few weeks of Asena Restaurant's opening in 1996. When he dropped a plate of food he was serving, I told him it was good luck. It was a sign that our special town was going to love his hospitality. Twenty-seven years later, restaurateurs Mustafa Yildirim and Muhittin Arpaci are very much at home in Alameda.
